Software Development is Like Shaving in a Hurry
The Start / About Me
How does one start blogging?
They just start.
After many times saying “I really need to start blogging”, this is my start.
About Me
My name is Bill Bartlett. I’ve been deeply immersed in almost all aspects of software architecture, design, development, implementation, operations, and support, for many years. I’ve been everything from a DBA to a Solutions Architect to a DevOps engineer to a front-line help desk person and everything in between. These days I focus mainly on the server, the database, and mobile. I use Linux and Windows and Mac, and iOS and Android – I am very much OS agnostic. I’m a Certified Ethical Hacker and a Certified Penetration Tester, and I’ve been a HIPAA specialist. I’ve done native mobile development since iOS 3 – my first “EMR-Lite” mobile app was the 5th EMR-related iPad app (and the 20-something-th EMR-related iPhone app) to be released into the Apple iOS App Store. I’ve been on the “big corporate” side, I’ve been a consultant, and I’ve been with a few startups. (The startups were the most challenging, but also where I learned the most.)
I am a firm believer in teaching everything I know to anyone who wants to listen, and in learning everything I can from everyone else. I am a firm believer that knowledge is meant to be shared, to be given, and to be received. We should always strive to keep learning.
I have also been very involved in the Scouting Program as an adult volunteer. I started as an Assistant Scoutmaster with a local Boy Scout Troop, worked as the Advancement Chair, became a Scoutmaster, helped found a Venturing Crew, retired as Scoutmaster but stayed on as the Eagle Coach, and I am still very involved as an Advisor with the Venturing Crew. I’ve done many camping trips and Summer Camps and several High Adventure trips with both the Troop and the Crew. (So far I’ve been to Philmont, Sea Base, and Floodwood, and I’m still hoping to get to Northern Tier.) Inevitably some of my postings will include some sort of “teachable moment” since I was always on the lookout for any opportunity for those with my Scouts.
The topics in this blog will probably be fairly diverse, from technical to database to management to “life lessons”. Hopefully I can give some tips or information that might help someone out there the same way that others have helped me, or at least perhaps I can provide some entertainment for someone other than just me.

And so it begins…
